Chehalis First Nation and BC Federation of Drift Fishers are pleased to invite you to the official opening of the Chehalis Fishing Trail on Monday October 5th. Informal lunch will be provided at 12:00pm at the Chehalis Healing Center (Lhawathet Lalem) located on the banks of the Chehalis just over the Morris Valley Bridge across from the Chehalis Campground (follow signs). Ceremonial opening will take place at the campsite at 1:30pm.
The planning and construction of the trail was initiated by the Chehalis First Nations in coordination with the BC Federation of Drift Fishers, with significant input and support from Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Trade, Nature Trust and Ministry of the Environment. Funding was provided by the Fraser Basin Council and the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC.
It was recognized some time ago that the diversion of the Chehalis River main flow was severely impacting angler access and trespassing on reserve land was increasing. The opening of the trail will dramatically improve angler access while maintaining the integrity of reserve property.
It is anticipated that the Chehalis trail will be a template for further cooperative efforts benefiting both First Nations and the recreational fishing community.
Please be part of this unique demonstration of cultures working together in enhancing fish stocks and providing fishing opportunities.
