Pallant Creek Hatchery Job Opening

The Haida Fisheries Program (Council of the Haida Nation) has an opening for a Hatchery Manager at Pallant Creek Hatchery located at Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, Canada.

The hatchery is located 40 km from the nearest community of Sandspit by gravel road. It is a federal facility that has been operated by the Haida Fisheries Program since 1998. A key element of the position is training and employment of Haida First Nation individuals.

Current yearly production targets are as follows:

  • 25 million Pallant Creek chum salmon fed fry (sea pen rearing, 1- 2 gram release size)
  • 5 million Mathers Creek chum salmon fed fry (freshwater raceway rearing, 1-2 gram helicopter release size)
  • 1 million coho salmon fry (380,000 for outplanting to headwaters as 2 gram fry and 615,000 to be reared to 20 gram smolts in a lake based net-pen facility)

The Manager is responsible for all aspects of hatchery operations including but not limited to the following:

  • Oversee all aspects of hatchery operations including personnel, fish culture, and facility maintenance
  • Supervise three full-time and up to ten part-time staff
  • Develop broodstock, eggtake, incubation and rearing plans to achieve hatchery production targets
  • Follow sound fish culture practices including DFO procedures for optimum fish hygiene and health
  • Prepare staffing schedules and recruit temporary personnel as required
  • Manage budgets and order materials as necessary
  • Record keeping and reporting

The ideal candidate will have two years experience as the manager or assistant manager of a comparable salmonid hatchery, a Bachelor of Science or Technical Diploma in Aquaculture or related field, and good supervisory and computer skills. Experience using NOPAD (Zenger Boxes) or similar modular incubation systems and net-pen rearing facilities and working with B.C. First Nations would be an asset. The Manager is required to live on site.

Salary range is $50,000 to $65,000 per annum with moving allowance and accommodation (3 BR home) provided. Initial employment contract will be for a minimum of one year with good possibility of extension.
