2006 Boxing Day Steelhead Derby

The Chilliwack Fish and Game Protective Association proudly presents the 63rd annual Boxing Day Steelhead Derby and Fundraiser on December 26th, 2006. This popular event unofficially marks the beginning of the winter steelhead season on the Chilliwack River each year.

Tickets are now available at Reaction Fly & Tackle and Fred's Custom Tackle. Tickets are $15.00 for club members, juniors (17 and under) and pensioners (over 65), $25.00 for non-members.

Derby kicks off at 6:00am with coffee at the club house. Lunch is served at the club house between 10:00am and 3:30pm. The official derby finish time is 2:00pm sharp. Trophies and prizes are awarded after the derby ends. Silent auctions are also available through the fundraiser.

Derby Rules

1. Entry fees:

A. Chilliwack Fish and Game Club members, juniors (17 and under), pensioners (over 65) ..... $15.00
B. Non-members ..... $25.00

2. Registration ends at 10:00am on derby day at the Chilliwack Fish and Game club house. No ticket sales on derby day other than the Fish and Game club house.

3. All participating anglers must have their ticket punched at one of the designated punch stations on the morning of the derby before proceeding to fish. ONLY ONE TICKET MAY BE PUNCHED PER ANGLER and those who weigh in a fish must present their punched ticket to validate their fish's place in the contest.

4. PUNCH STATIONS will be located at:

Lickman Road: 5:30am to 8:30am
Tamahi Bridge: 6:30am to 8:30am
The club house: 6:30am to 10:00am

5. For the purpose of this contest, the Chilliwack/Vedder River fishing will be from the confluence of Slesse Creek and downstream to the 401 Freeway Bridge

6. Fish must only be caught in the Chilliwack/Vedder River on December 26, during the contest.

7. All fish must be legally caught and all contestants must display good sportsmanship at all times. The chairman reserves the right to disqualify any contestant for poor sportsmanship.

8. All fish must be caught and landed by the contestant alone. No snagged fish.

9. A fish shall be a clipped HATCHERY steelhead of 5lbs or over and must be 50cm in length or over. There is a ONE FISH LIMIT.

10. When a contestant catches a fish, he/she must proceed to the weigh scale at the Fish and Game club house and weigh in the fish. In case of a tie, the first fish weighed in will be considered the winner.

11. Fish weighed in do not become the property of the Fish and Game Club; however, they may be donated for the annual Fish and Game Dinner.

12. In case of a dispute, the chairman's ruling will be final. Any protest must be in the hands of the chairman, in writing by 2.15pm derby day.

13. All trophies and prizes will be awarded at the club house at the close of the derby. Not more than one prize will be awarded to any one contestant.

14. If cancellation of the derby is necessary, it will be announced from the club house at 9:00am on Derby Day by the chairman.

15. IN THE EVENT THAT THE DERBY IS CANCELLED, it will be held on the following Sunday. The same format will apply, any exceptions will be announced at the club house upon derby cancellation.

Trophy and Prize Conditions

1. The trophies will be awarded in the following orders:

  • Heaviest fish weighed in (King Fish Trophy)
  • First fish weighed in
  • 2nd heaviest fish weighed in
  • 3rd heaviest fish weighed in
  • 4th heaviest fish weighed in
  • 5th heaviest fish weighed in
  • Heaviest fish by a club member
  • Heaviest fish by a lady
  • Heaviest fish by a junior
  • Heaviest fish by a pensioner
  • Smallest fish weighed in
  • Hidden weight fish

2. Trophy winners will be given their CHOICE OF ONE PRIZE IN ADDITION to the trophy in the above order.

3. Trophies will only be awarded if there is a winner in that category.

4. Prizes remaining will be awarded by a draw. Only punched tickets will be eligible for draw prizes.

The Chilliwack Fish and Game Protective Association would like to point out that it is the derby participant's responsibility to obey all laws, speed limits and to conduct themselves in an orderly fashion. Safety should be the participant's primary concern during driving to fishing destinations or to the weigh in station. The club is in no way responsible for participants.

Fundraiser

If you are not entering the derby, please be part of the fundraisers starting at 2:00pm at the club house. This year's fundraisers include:

  • Fish pond
  • Scratch and win tickets
  • auctions - Silent and live
  • 50/50 ticket draw
  • 50/50 draw for businesses
  • many punch derby ticket draws

Volunteers needed on derby day

Free lunch and coffee available for volunteers. Volunteers are needed for the following duties:

  • Punch stations - 6 volunteers
  • Registration on derby day - 2 volunteers
  • Set up and prizes - 2 volunteers
  • Cleanup crew - 6 volunteers

From Vedder Road, turn east onto Chilliwack Lake Road at the Vedder Bridge. Drive for 6 km. The clubhouse is on your left beside the firehouse.

Money raised from the derby will be used in future habitat work on the Chilliwack River!
