Posted on June 19th, 2006 by Friends of Semiahmoo
Bay Society
Herring, surf smelt, sand lance and anchovy spawn surveys will
be conducted on our local beaches as Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society
start mapping and monitoring spawn sites. As part of the Friends
of Semiahmoo Bay Society Marine Conservation Initiative, volunteers
will be taking part in a Marine Fish Identification and Habitat
Survey Methods workshop, June 25th at Beecher Place in Crescent
Beach. The workshop will be led by Mr. Dan Penttila of the Washington
State Department of Fisheries/Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).
Dan is a career biologist working for the Washington State Department
of Fisheries/Fish & Wildlife (WDFW). He is most recognized for
his groundbreaking research into the life cycles of forage fish.
Dan has worked from 1971 to the present almost entirely in marine
forage fish management, including research and formulation of spawning
habitat protection measures
These amazing fish use a diversity of habitats throughout their
life cycle. The workshop will provide participants with the skills
necessary to identify specific species eggs and their intertidal
spawning habitats. The session will include discussions on Forage
Fish ecology, habitat survey techniques and protocols; spawn identification,
human impacts and land use, a hands on Microscope session and a
field session.
Workshop registration forms are available on our
website or call 604-536-3552.
