Saving the Fraser River: Can it be Done?
Posted on January 29th, 2006 by Pamela Zevit
The Fraser River is the major scenic feature of the rapidly urbanizing Lower Mainland, and a river of major international ecological significance. But it is being increasingly modified and constrained due to concerns about flood hazard, desires to exploit the resources of the river, and demands to develop riverfront land. So what is the basis for the extraordinary ecological wealth of the river? Can it be saved from the demands of society? Over the past ten years, Michael Church has made many studies of the lower Fraser River, including those involving flow, sedimentation and the production of habitat in the river. Reports from Professor Church's research group at UBC are available on this website.
