Upcoming Open House regarding CN Rail and Cheakamus River
Posted on January 16th, 2006 by Edith Tobe
You are invited to attend a Public Open House presented by the Cheakamus Ecosystem Recovery Technical Committee (CERTC) to learn about what actions are being taken by CN Railway and CERTC on the Cheakamus River as a result of the August 5th, 2005 derailment and sodium hydroxide spill to the river.
The Cheakamus Ecosystem Recovery Technical and Steering Committees were established shortly after the spill, and are composed of multiple agency and
government representatives charged with completing the impact assessment of the spill, and with developing a recovery strategy and options.
At the open house, you will have an opportunity to meet the members of the Technical Committee (representatives from CN Railway and Triton Environmental Consulting, Ministry of Environment, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, District of Squamish, Squamish Nation, and Environment Canada), view the displays and ask questions. Among the poster displays will be information on the derailment site cleanup and monitoring, sodium hydroxide, ecosystem impact assessment, and environmental monitoring.
As well, there will be a sign up sheet to participate in a Stakeholder process at which the public can provide their input and recommendations for consideration.
Details are as follows:
Date: Wednesday, February 8th
Time: 4:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Location: Squamish Adventure Centre (Highway 99 and Loggers Lane Drive -
just opposite McDonald's)
If you would like more information please contact Edith Tobe at 604-898-9171, tobe@shaw.ca.
A website containing information on the spill, and activities of the technical and steering committees will be available shortly.
