| October 18th, 2005: Learn about the
Squamish River Estuary!
From Squamish Streamkeepers:
Meet Dr Colin Levings, PhD., Research Scientist of Fisheries and
Oceans Canada at the Squamish Streamkeepers monthly meeting, Tuesday,
November 1st at the Squamish Public Library at 7 pm and hear from
him what he learned. Everyone welcome. No admission charge!
Dr.Colin Levings will give about an hour powerpoint presentation
on the Biota of the Squamish River Estuary, then take some questions.
Afterwards, Matt Foy will follow with a 20 minute powerpoint presentation
on the restoration work done on the Estuary to date. Questions and
discussion to follow.
Only when the Central Basin of the Squamish River estuary was being
filled in for a coal port were studies done to determine if this
area was of any importance to fish. Hear from the man who did those
studies how he discovered that this was in fact one of the richest
estuaries in the world. Learn from Dr Colin Levings that the lower
estuary is thick with amphipods wherever certain plants prevail.
While some fish thrive on these tasty treats, other fish prefer
the shrimp that he found thriving in the upper estuary.
Dr Levings studies showed clearly that the Squamish Central Basin
was an extremely valuable piece of intertidal property. This information
led to an awareness that this was not the place for a coal port
and eventually, using his studies as a template, the Basin has been
greatly reclaimed.
