| September 20th, 2005: Skeena Fish Farms
on Hold From Save
our Skeena Salmon Campaign:
BAD NEWS - We have some inside info that the Strouts license may
be issued September 23rd or shortly after. It is crucial we stop
Strouts Point. Two licenses have already been issued but three are
needed before the fish farms will be moved in.
Please act again! Keep the Skeena fishfarm free!
What to do
(1) Email the BC government leader, Gordon Campbell premier@gov.bc.ca
(cc pat.bell.mla@leg.bc.ca)
and ask him not to allow a fish farm at Strouts Point.
(2) Write a letter to a BC newspaper. You know, and most people
near the Skeena River know, that Strouts, Anger and Petrel are right
in the Skeena estuary, right in the path of major Skeena wild salmon
migration routes. We have to let others know that the Skeena’s
millions of wild salmon are at risk.
(3) Act locally - If you live in BC, ask your local MLA and your
mayor to help save the Skeena salmon and write a letter to your
local paper.
Spread the word worldwide
(1) Tell others about www.saveourskeenasalmon.org
and the declaration, especially consider any contacts who might
be able to influence the fishfarm shareholders or our BC or Canadian
governments.
(2) Show or send others “Call from a Coast”. This film
shows why we love the Skeena salmon and the north coast ecosystem
and explains the threat. Distributing this film is helping to save
the Skeena salmon. It is a pleasure to watch and it moves people
to action - see the website. This is not a fundraiser; if you can
pay, do, otherwise we can send you a copy free (so far we are breaking
even). You can order a DVD or VHS by replying to this email.
Other news
The May Summit was a huge success. Four hundred people including
many community and First Nations leaders came from all over the
Skeena watershed and northcoast. The event helped elect two new
MLAs who oppose fish farms and are now working to save the Skeena
salmon. The Friends of Wild Salmon coalition was strengthened. FN
leaders are working with each other, funders, scientists and lawyers
to consider legal action if Strouts is approved without proper consultation.
There are so many people working and so many plans underfoot that
we may yet save our Skeena salmon.
Thanks again for signing the declaration; we are planning to continue
using them. Sincerely,
Luanne Roth (volunteer)
