| June 8th, 2005: New website in protecting
BCs marine environment
Vancouver, BC WildCanada.net today launched a new campaign
to protect British Columbias wild coast, the marine environment
and the creatures that live there. The new online campaign, OceansOnline.ca
combines sophisticated online technology with grassroots mobilization
to strengthen the capacity of marine conservation organizations
in British Columbia.
OceansOnline.ca is being launched in partnership with Canadian
Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS), Georgia Strait Alliance (GSA),
Living Oceans Society (LOS) and Raincoast Conservation Society.
To kickoff OceansOnline.ca, an Oceans Day Celebration will take
place at English Bay in Vancouver. Mr. Floatie will be there alongside
ocean aficionados to talk to the public about the importance of
marine conservation. Several grade school classrooms will be in
attendance to participate in a beach cleanup.
Our oceans are magnificnet, they have sustained us for thousands
of years, are home to countless creatures and fill us with wonder
with their beauty. People feel a special conneciton with the ocean.
says Kate Dugas, National Campaign Director at WildCanada.net. In
BC and around the world, the health of our oceans is threatened
by habitat destruction, oil and gas exploration and extraction,
salmon aquaculture, pollution from cities, and unsustainable fishing
practices. We know that people want to do whatever they can to become
a part of the solutions to these problems and OceansOnline.ca puts
the tools to make a difference right at their fingertips.
We created OceansOnline.ca so people would have a place on
the web to use a comprehensive set of free online tools; send faxes
and emails to decision makers, write letters to editors of newspapers
and join the ever growing community of people who care about protecting
the ocean., says Dugas. Oceans Online also provides information,
news, maps, links and updates on the central issues and campaigns
relating to marine issues in BC.
Wildcanada.net is a national conservation organization that helps
Canadians protect wild lands and wildlife. Wildcanada.net combines
grassroots organizing with sophisticated on-line action centres
that provide conservation-minded Canadians and existing conservation
groups from around the country with ways to protect nature.
