| May 11th, 2005: If not now, when? If
not us, who?
From Georgia
Strait Alliance:
"The Georgia Strait Alliance is helping to
protect the things I value most: a clean environment, an unpolluted
ocean and healthy food. I am very happy to support them in every
way I can."
Dr. Sinclair Philip
Co-owner,
Sooke Harbour House
"I'm a monthly donor to the Georgia Strait
Alliance because it is unique among environmental organizations
and extremely effective at teaching us to live in ways that are
kinder to the Strait while enhancing the quality of our own lives."
Dr. Neil Frazer
Professor, University
of Hawaii at Manoa
Dear friend:
Do you take your children to the beach, go boating, fishing or
paddling, stroll along the sea shore or enjoy an ocean view? Then
you know the importance of Georgia Strait to the quality of life
in our region, and why the Georgia Strait Alliance?s work to protect
this beautiful inland sea is so crucial.
Biologically, Georgia Strait is one of the richest marine areas
in the world, with thousands of species of plants and animals. But
because its shores are home to more than two thirds of British Columbians,
Parks Canada has identified the Strait as ?Canada?s most at-risk
natural environment?. This is why we need your help to protect these
waters, our own backyard, Georgia Strait.
The Georgia Strait Alliance is a hands-on organization, tackling
tough issues, promoting practical solutions and achieving real change
in the region (recent achievements). Georgia Strait Alliance was
established fifteen years ago, and is still the only citizens? organization
focused on protecting the marine environment Strait-wide.
In 2005, the work of the Georgia Strait Alliance is more important
than ever. Pollution, urban sprawl, mismanagement of resources and
inappropriate development threaten our coastal waters more than
ever. Today only 85 southern resident killer whales remain, lingcod
stocks are down by 97% from a century ago, and 30 fish species are
threatened or endangered. Government staff cuts and rollbacks over
the past four years mean that today, there is virtually no monitoring
and enforcement of environmental laws. Our governments are not protecting
our environment and no matter what party wins the election May 17,
it is critical that we have a citizens' group that will hold the
government's feet to the fire if we are to maintain a healthy environment.
Further damage to the Strait?s rich ecosystems would be a tragedy.
But with your help, we can protect these waters, so that future
generations can enjoy this wonderful place we call home. By making
a donation to the Georgia Strait Alliance, you are investing in
one of the most remarkable ? and threatened ? marine ecosystems
in the world.
Right now is a critical time. To continue working to protect Georgia
Strait ? your heritage ? we need your help. Your donation of \$35,
\$50, \$100, \$250, \$500, or whatever you can afford, will make
a real difference.
Over 85% of GSA?s revenues go directly into programs. By supporting
the Georgia Strait Alliance, you will add weight to our voice and
help us put critical environmental issues into the public spotlight
through the media, public events and face-to-face contact with people
around the region. Your donation will help us deliver compelling
information to elected officials and government agencies, to monitor
environmental impacts around the region, and to hold government
and industry accountable for their actions.
Please help make a difference. Support the Georgia Strait Alliance
by making a tax-deductible contribution today.
After all, the government is not looking after our environment
these days. If we don?t act, who will? And if not now, when?
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Laurie MacBride,
Executive Director
P.S.: One of the best ways to support the Georgia Strait Alliance
is to become a Strait Saver or monthly donor. I?ve personally chosen
this option because it?s so easy (I don?t have to write or mail
cheques) and because it saves time and administrative costs, so
even more money goes to programs.
P.P.S.: May 17 is the date of our provincial election. If clean
air and water and enforcement of environmental laws are important
to you, please familiarize yourself with your candidates and their
policies, and make an informed choice at the ballot box.
