February 6th, 2005: KEEPS January 2005 Summary of Activities

From Kanaka Education and Environmental Partnership Society:

It’s a brand new year, and we are back in the saddle after a bit of a break over the holiday season. The weather certainly didn’t take long to announce its presence, and the cold snap and subsequent vicious deluge of tropical-origin rain is easily the biggest news story of the Kanaka watershed this January. The Bell-Irving Hatchery weather station recorded over 266mm of rain from what was essentially one storm.

Work planning for 2005 is well underway. On January 24th, KEEPS met with GVRD staff in order to identify projects and events of common interest in the Kanaka Work Plan. This was followed by a Catching Kanaka Spirit (CKS) planning session on January 31st. This summer’s CKS program will have teams of youth aged 13-18 participating with KEEPS activities such as water quality monitoring and conservation area cleanups. CKS information and updates will begin to appear on our website later this month.

Our education programs resumed in January, and we have involved approximately 200 students so far in the New Year. Our classroom Watershed Road Show program will continue to be the primary activity until early March and the onset of field trip season.

Watershed Roadshow, Albion Elementary, January 26th

KEEPS hosted a visit from the Byrne Creek Streamkeepers at Bell-Irving Hatchery on January 15th. Salmon fry from Bell-Irving have long been used to augment populations in the heavily urbanized Byrne Creek system, and the Burnaby group was curious to learn a little more about the origin of their fry and what KEEPS does.
