This is the catch of the day for Kitimat angler Barkley, slamming this 30lb Chinook on a trolled offering, a special lure we call the scoopie. We had to chase this one down as he was heading back to the Queen Charlottes once hooked. Making a desperate leap out of the water this fight lasted a good 15 minutes before being netted, spending quite a time trying to elude the lure attached to his lower jaw as well giving Barkley an awesome fight. These fish are very aggressive and very fresh this time of year. With expected size numbers in the 75lb range, one bite could bring on a monster.
Repeat client Brian, who tested his new Hardy Bougle' reel on its first pool of the trip, hooked a nice Steelhead only to have it smile and go away at shore. Not to worry as Brian made the Bougle’ grind some more as he is holding one of his fresh Steelhead. Not to mention he fished the same fly for the 4 days he was with us. I guess why switch if its working!
Global Flow Canada CEO Cam hooked a nice steelhead while drifting the Upper Kalum. Cam also hooked into a monster Chinook, I think, as this fish would not move out of the fast water after a long tug of war, and hunkered down behind a large rock without moving. I had no choice but to pull the 15lb line with my bare hands, feeling the mass of this beast shaking its head under the fast frothing water. The line was very tight and the singing from the tension made it inevitable as to the outcome. I finally got the fish to move and the line suddenly snapped at a junction point. A possible record fish!
His partner, the top Chemical Engineer in Alberta, smacked this respectable Chromer as you can see in the pic; this 18 lb female fish is flawless. And tucked in behind that yellow coat is the happy fishers smile. Our Doctors from the USA spent sometime in Skeena country this late May and hooked some nice Chinook on the fly as well a number of Steelhead. Having a friend who spends his life monitoring bugs, he tied the fellas some beauties and the Steelhead could not shy away from them. I had to take a long look at these specimens and probed each fibre for the recipe, nice flies Doc. Attached is a nice Kitimat Steelhead with the Doctors approved smile. See you boys next year!
Our Ukrainian friends came back this year after a Chinook trip to remember last season. I remember the phone call, “Tracey, I haven’t caught one of those Steelheads before and they say it’s a good fight”. We’ll that was all it took and when we hit the Tennis Ball Pool the lights started flashing as the father of the group gave the young grasshopper a lesson in Steelheading hooking 4 fish in the same pool, it was definitely Ballentime! The young grasshopper, the Alberta Treasury Man proved he could follow up with a Steelhead as well, and landed a couple nice fish, one on the fly attached in this pic with his Father’s as well. Our late season bookings are always a test of great fishing or high water and Jay Goldman arrived after a bump in the water. This made the catching extremely difficult for Montreal Shipping agent and we hooked a nice Steelhead and had a day on the Saltwater trapping a fresh supper of Dungeness Crab.
As the local rivers climb into the flood range we await the spring run-off and the rivers to clean so we can search out the seasons Chinook run. Our Saltwater trips are beginning this week so stay on the computer for some great pics, tight lines.
