Shuswap Lake

September 3 2006

Question?? What would make all these markings but not bite that much?? These beggars were the answer! I started at the outer marker, usual fodder to start, grn/grn flasher setup on one side at 50' and chrome Apex at 40' on the other side. That grn/grn caught two of them koks in pretty quick order, nice size fish too! With an armada of house boats on their way in I opted to leave that area and work up the tracks, still alot of fish marking in that same 40-70' depth range so I'm guessing lots of koks on the move. With no further bites I pulled the lines and did the Totem thing, not so much as a bite and not much marking.

Over to Murdock, and although this area showed promise with all the fish that were marking, those groups of 5 boats coming out and 3 going in on a steady basis just wasn't my cup of tea so I didn't hang around there long! I did a B line back towards the tracks and took two more kokanee down at 60' on a pnk/chrome Apex. Nice fish, pre-spawners, not chrome but not red either and would probably still be good table fare but back they went anyways!! After my "full day" trip by myself I called it quits and entered "the zoo" at the boat launch!! Not hard to tell it was the last long weekend of the summer! Another indicator of just how busy it was for boats, I went to fill the boat up and the two gas stations that sell marked fuel had run out!!! Not a bad day out fishing but for most it would be classified as slow, still, I certainly don't mind fooling around with the kokanee, their a good a sport fish as any!! Hey, Arrow trip coming up, Jim's my direct competition!!

Had a last minute client phone up, Rod from EDMONTON (had to get it right this time, OK Colin??) wanted to get out for a half day so who was I to refuse! Besides, we have the grand kids for a week so this was Blampa's chance to have a break!! I suggested to Rod that if he wanted to keep a fish to get a lake trout tag, them bows have been just to elusive to catch, let alone a bigger legal one!

With out fish of choice picked out we headed right to the Totem, and for nearly two hours got nothing more than a few bites. Quite a few fish marking as the morning wore on and finally, we had a fish on! The Captain showed Rod how to lose a fish when setting the hook off the rigger so that was fish #1 gone!! However, with a sil/gry Apex on one side at 115' and an all chrome one on the other at 80', we started to get into the fish! Nothing big enough to keep for supper though, but Rod was just having fun watching that rod bounce and bringing in fish like these over the next hour and a half! Three to the boat and with mine I think it was................4 or 5 lost?? Good thing I let Rod do his own hook sets, other wise it would have been tough for me to justify my expertise!!! Unfortunately about the time the half day tour was done the fish really started to mark but, with the little ones at home I couldn't oblige Rod in his request to stay out longer!! That's business, both fishing and family!! Make it a full day next time Rod and we'll be able to fill that tag!!! Thanks for coming out, look forward to taking you out next year!!

Five hours and thirty eight minutes, that's how long it took me to get skunked today!! I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later, must have been that bragging I was doing to myself in the mirror this morning! I started at the markers, to the Eagle, to Murdock, couple bites total, then over to Crescent Bay and "the wall" couple bites, then back to the tracks, couple bites and that was the day!! Lots of fish marking pretty much everywhere I fished, but they just weren't interested, obviously! Manyu was out on the lake again this AM, as we passed he gave me the "got nothing" sign, not a bite all morning! That's fishing, one warning on the boat launch by the bridge. There's a couple of hugggggggggeee holes in a couple of spots and even my trailer got high centered in one of them. Also, there are a couple of gravel berms that have piled up by us guys that power the boat onto the trailer, yesterday my prop mowed one of those berms down so make sure you've got your tilt up as much as possible!!!

Holy cow dung, I called Richard and Colin Calgarians when they were in fact Edmontoneunites!!! Good gravy folks, sorry about that, maybe one day you can move to Calgary and fit the story????? Sorry guys, correction made!!

Hey, guess what, more Albertans out this AM!! I got out for the usual 1 hour pre-fish before I picked up Richard and his son-in-law Colin at the dock, always gotta check out the fish first ya know! Not as much marking out in front but still, some fish, so I went with the grn/grn again and that Ironhead spoon that worked out the other day. The grn/grn still working, good knockoff and fish on, for about 18 seconds and that was it, then a fish on but not off the clip (probably a kok) but it was gone, and then a big fish on, it but lost about 20' behind the boat, time to pick up the guys!!

We did quite a few passes through the bay and then up by the tracks, the grn/grn took a good hit and came off the clip but the fish didn't stick! The Ironhead was doing squat on its side and with quite a few fish marking down at 60-80' and the chance of them being lakers I switched up the one side to the big blk/whi Len Thompson, and it didn't take long for Richard to get into a nice fish!! At first I would have sworn it was a good size rainbow by the bend in the rod and the runs it took but, it turned out to be a legal size laker that Richard chose to release, like to see that!! The strange part about the fish smacking the hook is that I had to take the net handle and pry both or these guys arses off the seat to get to the rod!! Hey, I know your on holidays but get the rod for gosh sakes!! The real "sleeper" was Colin when the next fish hit, I'm sure I could have washed and waxed the boat by the time he got up to grab the rod and of course by then the fish had spawned and died!!! Faster Colin, faasssterrr!!!

With not much more action than that in the area we folded up camp and headed across to the Totem, had to get Colin at least one fish, even if it meant keeping him awake to do it! There were some lakers marking but not stacked up as much as they have in the past however, we still put the lines in, green FST one side and Canoe on the other. The FST at 120' took the first fish but Richard had a bad hook up off the clip and it was gone. That even happens to the Captain so good try in any event! A second fish hit the same spoon, this time I cattle prodded Colin and he "sprang" into action, but of course, after I changed the oil on the truck and checked the air in the tires, he lost the fish!!! You getting the idea I'm picking on you yet Colin?

A couple more passes in the same area and although we had a few miniscule bites, not much else happening , looked like our 3 hour window was rapidly closing! I "donated" an extra half hour to the team and the Canoe spoon took the next fish and yes, Colin did actually spring into action and yes, he did get it to the boat!!! A bit smaller than Richards but still a good fish , especially considering it seemed like he didn't want to catch a fish???? Good day out there guys, had alot of fun, even if at Colin's expense!! After all, it is my job to distract the client if the fishing is slow and I think I did OK at that!! Thanks again guys, maybe see you next week Richard!!

Okanagan Lake

September 2 2006

Jim made it out for an evening fish this time, just to see if things would be any different than the usual early morning stuff. And as usual, Jim got into the rainbows, boating 4 in pretty short order on the good old Cop Car Gypsy again, on the surface and about 200' behind the boat . He was working the OK Center area again, but his best fish story was the 20 lber he lost on a big black sparkle Apex that was down at 44' down and about 120' behind the ball. When the fish hit it took line and by the time it was done had about 300' out! How the heck can you see 300' feet Jim, you carrying the scoped rifle with you again! Anyways, his tug-a-war ensued for a good 15 minutes but all he had to show after all his efforts was a straightened hook on the big Apex! You gotta know there's some weight involved when a fish does that 'cause the hooks on them Apex's are pretty stout!! Thanks for the report Jim, hope your bringing your horseshoes with you to Arrow along with that "secret" weapon we just talked about on the phone!! See you there!!

August 23 2006

My reliable source was out on the lake again, Jim did a tour around the OK Center area to see what he could bring up and as usual, got into the rainbows! No secret weapons, just bigger spoons pulled down at 30' or so and that seemed to do the trick. The bigger bows have been hiding on him lately but when you can get a bunch in this size who cares!! Jim knows as I do that its just a matter of time before that double digit fish shows up, persistence and persistence which means lots of time on the water is the way to get into more fish and start to get into the bigger fish. Thanks for the report Jim!!!
