Inexpensive, Durable and Effective!
By Rodney Hsu

I am a big fan of spinning reels. They are easy and fun to operate, sometimes even cool to look at. They have been around for over a century, and are still popular among many anglers. There seems to be a general stereotyping that labels spinning reels as these huge, rusty, noisy egg beaters that are useless after two trips. The cheaper reels may fall into that category, and are perfect for newcomers as entry level reels. The more expensive reels however, are products of art. With modern mechanical features and fancy colours, high-end spinning reels are every spinfisher's dream. No need to spend the big bucks these days though, there are many reels in the mid price range that can also deliver the expected performance. Shimano Sidestab 2500 is one of these reels.

I first started using a Shimano Sidestab around two years ago. I have been looking for a reel that doesn't weigh much, and can be used for a variety of species such as small trout and pink salmon. At the same time, I wanted a durable reel that can withstand the battle, and come home in one piece after a day of 50 pinks. A baitcaster, even a small one, can be an overkill for small salmon and trout, despite its long lasting life span Shimano Sidestab 2500 is small in size that can be categorized in the 2 to 8lb class. You can use it to spin for various species such as rainbow trout, pink salmon, coho salmon and even baitfish for some of the coarsefish or saltwater groundfish.

There are several features that make Shimano Sidestab 2500 multifunctional. Its Quickfire trigger is one of Shimano's signature spinning reel design that allows you to cast with the click of a finger. This reduces time fondling with the bail and line each time you want to cast. Although its rear drag is not as sensitive as most front drag reels, it allows you to control your drag tension while fighting a fish if necessary. Sidestab 2500 contains 3 ball bearings, giving it a very smooth retrieve.

What a great reel eh? Equipment this fancy can cost a fortune these days. I am pleased to tell you that Shimano Sidestab 2500 is reasonably priced, you can purchase it between $50 and $80 at most stores. This is an inexpensive investment that is extremely durable. Today, I still use my Shimano Sidestab 2500 occasionally when targeting trout and smaller salmon species. If you are new into fishing but hesitate to spend the bucks, then this may be a reel that you want to try out.
