The
Family fishing event and derby organized this year by the Fraser Valley
Salmon Society drew a large gathering to Main Beach at Cultus Lake.
Nearly 250 avid fishers entered the one day event Saturday along with
close to 200 more on lookers taking in the displays and festivities.
An extra drawing this year was the attendance of
the Vancouver Canucks and Orca Bay. Fin the Canucks' team mascot,
entertained the crowd throughout the day and signed autographs.
Fin even fitted in a short fishing trip and was able to land 3 of
his "cousins"in under a hour. Trent Klatt and 3 of his
5 children also took in the derby with Piper, Trevor, and Tatum
able to land 4 pike minnows that were the quarry of the day.
Eric Skanning one of the local Fishing guides that
provided their boats for the event had The Klatt family out in his
boat. "The Klatt's certainly enjoy fishing and they were able
to land 4 and lost a few more" Skanning said. Trent was kept
busy baiting the hooks while the kids fished "Skanning added.
"All my family enjoys fishing and we spend
a lot of the off season fishing back in my home in Minnesota"
Klatt said while signing constant line of autograph seekers. Klatt
also said he and teammate Brandon Morrison had just returned from
a fishing trip at the Queen Charlottes. "Brandon landed a 45
pounder and I got my first tyee (a Chinook over 30 pounds) as I
caught a 53 pound Chinook" Klatt said.
Peter MacPherson derby chairman for the event said
" The derby most likely was our best ever and having Orca Bay
involved with us along with Fin and Trent Klatt was a definite bonus.
As well being able to take handicapped kids and others out fishing
in the 5 boats was very rewarding to us. A lot of thanks has to
go to the guides that included Dean Werk, Eric Skanning, Greg Heaps,
Greg Larson, and Joe Pomeranz that gave us their time and provided
the boats. The fact The Family Fishing Society provided us with numerous
prizes sent a lot of young fishers home happy " MacPherson
concluded
