Food is major characteristic that is tightly associated with the country of its origin. Each nation has an unique style of cuisine that is rarely found in other parts of the world. Danish cooking is no exception. Not only it is unique, it is adventurous. Every trip to Denmark I am excited to taste those dishes that I have previously enjoyed as well as those I have yet to try. Besides the usual meat and potato dishes, seafood plays an important niche in Danish cooking.

The open face sandwiches, or smørrebrød, is a famous component of Danish cooking. They can not be found anywhere else in the world, not even in nearby Scandinavia countries such as Norway and Sweden. These sandwiches, are simply made of a piece of rye bread that acts as a base, which is decorated by many delicious ingredients. They can be flat sandwiches that only contain one or two toppings, or they can be piled highly with several colourful ingredients. Some of the more popular seafood smørrebrød include pickled herring, shrimp & egg salad, smoked salmon, smoked eel with scrambled egg, or even pan fried sole fillets with remoulade. These sandwiches are light, healthy, yet extremely delicious. The sandwiches are often accompanied by a glass of beer or aquavit. There are many variations of smørrebrød that one can make, based on personal preference. Pickled herring comes in several flavour, from different sweetness and sourness to exotic flavours such as curry.

Fish is also used for dinner, but certainly not consumed as often because seafood is extremely expensive in Denmark. Fish frikadeller is by far the most popular dish of all. These fish balls that are made of both smoked salmon and cod are pan-fried until golden brown, and served with lemon juice and a light salad. Atlantic cod is also another fish species that is in high demand. Each Christmas, charter boats are filled with hopeful anglers who try their luck on the cod fishery. It is considered good luck when you catch a cod during the new years holiday. Beside salmon and cod, flatfish such as sole and halibut are also enjoyed by many Danes. Flatfish fillets are usually coated in breadcrumb before pan fried. These delicious dishes are reasons that I continue to visit this magnificent country.
